Movie Diary
a) Quantum Of Solace
Do people realize how stupid (or at least anti-intellectual) they sound when they whine about the title of this movie? Those words aren't that obscure, you should probably know what they mean if you're an English-speaking adult. Anyway this was pretty solid, although definitely not overall as good as Casino Royale, felt kind of like the middle installment of a trilogy of they keep the continuity running through the new Bond movies. I think my favorite thing about Daniel Craig as Bond is that he still gets in the quips, but they're usually either totally deadpan, without a single knowing wink or lingering smile, or total brute force physical comedy.
b) He Was A Quiet Man
I could see this movie being received very differently, and probably better, with anyone but Christian Slater in the lead role (the same can probably be said of his NBC show that just got cancelled, actually). But for some reason I kind of find Slater in his current mid-career flailing kind of likable, even though he's really not a very good actor.
c) The Hoax
This was a nice way to waste away a Saturday morning on the couch, wasn't really sure what it'd be like or what it'd be about but it took a pretty interesting story and told it well. I'm not sure if I liked the way they blended the truth and Irving's lies more and more as the movie went on, though, I kind of feel like there either should've been zero ambiguity, or they should've gone full tilt into Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind territory.
d) Blood And Chocolate
I watched this one day when J.G. had it on, kind of a soap opera monster movie along the lines of Twilight but with werewolves, except unlike Twilight it knows its place in B-movie land. Not bad, though, pretty decent special effects.
e) What Lies Beneath
It's weird to sit down and watch a movie like this 5-10 years after you saw the trailer and heard about it a thousand times and kinda felt like you already saw it. But it kinda worked because I don't think I ever really understood what the premise or the story was based on the trailer, so I was still kind of engaged, although it's kind of a dumb movie, and once the big revelation happens, there are like 3 climactic action scenes in a row, each one feeling like the final showdown, til the damn thing is finally over. It's so weird that Clark Gregg wrote this movie.
