Deep Album Cuts Vol. 289: Migos
Earlier this year, Migos started to splinter off into factions, with Offset going solo and Quavo and Takeoff forming a duo that released a pretty good album, Only Built For Infinity Links, a few weeks ago. And just the idea of Migos, who seemed like one of the most united and brotherly rap groups ever, breaking up had already really bummed people out. And then Takeoff was shot and killed on Monday night, bringing the group's decade of stardom to a very abrupt and decisive end. But I dunno, it's hard not to be cheered up a little hearing his music, Migos always had a way of putting a smile on your face.

Takeoff was always my favorite out of the group, in 2017 I made a playlist of my favorite Takeoff moments both with and without the rest of Migos, and a few tracks from that ("Copy Me," "Playa Playa," "WOA," "Big On Big") are on here. But "Too Much Jewelry," "Gang Gang," and "All Good" are some more great Takeoff-heavy tracks. And I didn't make room for the solo albums but Takeoff's The Last Rocket was really solid and underrated.
From the moment Migos started to establish a national profile in 2013, it felt like people were always counting them out, assuming they were a flash in the pan that would be gone soon. But they just kept making hits and getting bigger, releasing their biggest album, the double platinum Culture II, five years after that initial burst of interest. Migos had so many songs that were mixtape hits or YouTube hits that I really tried to dig a little deeper and avoid songs that had videos. It's crazy how different Offset sounds on the early tapes, he really was the late bloomer of the group.
Zaytoven is one of my favorite producers and I think it's notable that he's got hours of great songs with Migos in addition to hours of great songs with Gucci Mane and hours of great songs with Future, just a ridiculous catalog. On this playlist, Zaytoven produced "Bakers Man," "Young Rich N****s," "Migos Origin," "Big On Big," "Brown Paper Bag," and "Too Much Jewelry." Murda Beatz is an MVP of Migos production too, he did "Copy Me," "New Atlanta," "Playa Playa," "Gang Gang," and "Type Shit."
