My last deep cuts playlist was Carly Rae Jepsen, and it occurred to me that while she and Tove Lo make pretty different music, they've had parallel career arcs. Granted, "Habits (Stay High)" wasn't quite as big as "Call Me Maybe," but they both had their biggest hits early on, and a fairly successful follow-up, and then settled into a groove as more of a niche artist. I was skeptical of Tove Lo at first -- I didn't like "Habits," but then I dug "Talking Body," and when Blue Lips came out and became my #1 album of 2017, I went back and realized that all her albums are excellent.
It's notable that while Max Martin and other Swedish producers and songwriters have been absolutely running American pop for the last couple decades, Swedish artists very rarely make the same splash over here, and "Habits" was actually the biggest U.S. hit by a Swedish act since Ace Of Base. The deep cut "Mateo" is actually the only time Tove Lo has worked with Max Martin, which is a little surprising since a huge amount of her catalog is produced by frequent Martin collaborators (Shellback, Ilya, Mattman & Robin, The Struts, Ali Payami)
