The 2019 Remix Report Card

Way back in 2007, I began doing a regular feature here on Narrowcast called the Remix Report Card, collecting and rating all the recent all-star remixes of popular rap and R&B singles. And from 2014 to 2018, Noisey ran it as a quarterly column. But I had gradually started writing the columns more sporadically and then dropped off for a while, largely because official remixes of rap hits had become more and more rare over the last few years. This year Noisey was kind of nominally shuttered as all of Vice's music content (including my old Remix Report Card columns) was moved underneath the general Vice banner, so I decided that rather than let this thing I started 12 years ago die out, I'm gonna bring it back to Narrowcast, perhaps give it a go somewhere else in the future.

Since my last report card for Noisey was in June of last year, I'll cover some remixes from the second half of 2018 just to kind of keep the comprehensive continuity of the column going, but this is mostly a 2019 wrap-up. I used to fill these things with YouTube links, but now that pretty much every official remix goes on streaming services, I just put them all in a Spotify playlist

“Boo’d Up (Remix)” by Ella Mai featuring Nicki Minaj and Quavo
Before Quavo’s lookalike Jacquees made headlines for a popular unauthorized remix of “Trip” that was taken offline by Ella Mai’s label, Quavo appeared on the official remix of her breakthrough hit. It just didn’t really sound right with Nicki and Quavo bringing “MotorSport” energy to this gooey sentimental R&B jam, though.
Best Verse: Quavo
Overall Grade: D

“Camelot (Remix)” by NLE Choppa featuring Yo Gotti, BlocBoy JB, and Moneybagg Yo
In my 2019 rap radio hits post last week, I noted that there are 7 different rappers from Memphis currently in the prime of their careers and making national hits, so it's pretty cool to hear 4 of them on the same track (we'll never get all of them on the same track just because of the rift between the Gotti camp and Dolph camp). Moneybagg is currently my favorite out of these guys, but everyone turns in a good verse.
Best Verse: Moneybagg Yo
Overall Grade: A-

“Caramel (Remix)” by Lloyd featuring City Girls
One of the remarkable things about the rise of City Girls is that it happened during a year when the more talented half of the duo was in prison. Credit to Yung Miami for keeping the group name alive, but she drops a pretty worthless 8 bar verse at the top of this remix so it just feels like there should be a JT verse coming later, but of course it never did, because JT didn't get out until 10 months later.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: F

“Cut Up (Remix)” by Blac Youngsta featuring Tory Lanez and G-Eazy
I love the "Cut Up" beat and could think of dozens of current rap stars I'd like to hear on it before I'd ever name Gerald, but Daystar's verse is nice at least.
Best Verse: Tory Lanez
Overall Grade: C+

“Gonna Love Me (Remix)” by Teyana Taylor featuring Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and Raekwon
Kanye West has never been shy about how much RZA has influenced his production sound. So there’s something that just sounds right about three Wu Tang legends rapping over this Delfonics-sampling single from Teyana Taylor’s West-produced K.T.S.E. album. Ghostface has always been the group’s MVP of soulful relationship rap, but Meth comes off with the slickest verse here.
Best Verse: Method Man
Overall Grade: A-

“Good As Hell (Remix)” by Lizzo featuring Ariana Grande
Since this song was over 3 years old when it started to build steam on the charts, I can see why they thought it needed a refresh with a new guest star. But in the end Ari doesn't really add much to this, and I've never heard the version with her on the radio.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: C+

“Hot (Remix)” by Young Thug featuring Travis Scott and Gunna
Given that Young Thug is about ten times more talented than Travis Scott in every way, I'm not wild about their respective career trajectories since the days of "Mamacita" and "Pick Up The Phone." So it's pretty annoying that once Thug finally got a big #1 album thanks to a Travis-assisted lead single, they gratuitously threw Travis on the radio version of the second single. The Travis verse isn't bad, but the song didn't need it, it was already a hit.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B

“Leave It Smokin’ (Remix)” by Tamia featuring Wale
Salaam Remi sampled one of ‘80s rap’s favorite breakbeats, “Ashley’s Roachclip,” for Tamia’s biggest radio hit in over a decade. So Wale, always a smooth operator on R&B tracks, keeps with the retro theme and throws some Slick Rick ad libs into his verse.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B-

“Level Up (Remix)” by Ciara featuring Missy Elliott and Fatman Scoop
Perhaps the only way Ciara could crank up the energy on her Jersey Club-sampling dance track was to bring in both of her collaborators from Missy Elliott’s 2005 hit “Lose Control.” What did surprise me, however, is that Missy really shines more on the midtempo bridge than on the verse.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B

“Lil Bebe (Remix)” by DaniLeigh featuring Lil Baby
I mean really, if the title of the song lends itself to an obvious guest for the remix, you might as well lean into it. And Lil Baby’s melodic flow really suits Florida singer DaniLeigh’s breakthrough hit well. I think I find the song too annoying to enjoy the remix much though.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B-

“Love Lies (Remix)” by Khalid & Normani featuring Rick Ross
Like his MMG labelmate Wale, Rick Ross is someone you can depend on reliably for R&B guest verses. But his bland introductory verse really doesn’t add anything to Normani’s first post-Fifth Harmony hit. “I see no flaws, so let’s face it/ No Roseanne Barr, despite the ratings” is a pretty funny couplet, though.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: C+

“Motivation (Remix)” by Normani featuring 21 Savage
I know that 21 Savage's image is a lot different than it was a year or two back thanks to his last album and his activism, but he's still about as stiff and one-note as a rapper as he ever was, so it sounds a little ridiculous to put him on a shiny pop jam like this.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: D

“My Type (Remix)” by Saweetie featuring Jhene Aiko and City Girls
Another 'City Girls' feature that's really just Yung Miami, probably the only female rap star right now who's less talented than Saweetie. So it's up to Jhene Aiko to save the remix, which she does, because, as "Post To Be" proved, it's fun to hear her talk shit on a club banger that's completely different from her solo records.
Best Verse: Jhene Aiko
Overall Grade: C-

“Old Town Road (Remix)” by Lil Nas X featuring Young Thug, Mason Ramsey and Billy Ray Cyrus
The first "Old Town Road" remix with Billy Cyrus was the big one that rocketed the song to a historic chart run, but of course Lil Nas X kept releasing remixes for months until it became kind of a joke, with this being the most notable of those and the only one that featured an actual rapper, who got washed by the Walmart kid.
Best Verse: Mason Ramsey
Overall Grade: D

“Panini (Remix)” by Lil Nas X featuring DaBaby
This remix came out at the moment when it just felt like people were throwing DaBaby on every remix, but he's actually a good match for this beat.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B

“Pose (Remix)” by Yo Gotti featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Uzi Vert
I like this song, in both the original version with Uzi and in the remix with Meg that they threw out there when it wasn't getting radio plays, but they should have put Billy Porter on the track.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B+

“Plug Walk (Remix)” by Rich The Kid featuring Gucci Mane, YG and 2 Chainz
If you’ve read this column before, you know that one of my frequent laments is that rappers rarely bother to add a new verse of their own to the all-star remix of their single. So I gotta give props to Rich The Kid that he put a new verse on here, commenting on his feud with Lil Uzi Vert and his recent home invasion. Still, there are 3 guys on here that are far better rappers than Rich. I apologize if it's disorienting to see such an old remix of such an old song on here, this track came out the week I ran my last Remix Report Card on Noisey.
Best Verse: 2 Chainz
Overall Grade: B+

“7 Rings (Remix)” by Ariana Grande featuring 2 Chainz
When "7 Rings" came out and everybody compared Ariana Grande's chart-topping single to rap songs including "Pretty Boy Swag" and "Spend It," Soulja Boy insulted her on social media while the always shrewd Tity Boi connected with Ari behind the scenes and collaborated with her.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B

“Shotta Flow (Remix)” by NLE Choppa featuring Blueface
NLE Choppa isn't a great rapper but he sounds brilliant next to Blueface.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: D

“Show Me Love (Remix)” by Alicia Keys featuring 21 Savage and Miguel
This remix looks way worse on paper than it does in practice, mainly because they added some drums to the acoustic track, and Savage puts in a little more effort than he did on the Normani remix. Still not great, though, and he has one of the worst voices for AutoTune in modern rap.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: C-

“Talk (Remix)” by Khalid featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Yo Gotti
At this point it seems like almost any song could be improved by a Meg verse, but her and Gotti are a weird fit for this beat, which isn't really made for rapping over.
Best Verse: Megan Thee Stallion
Overall Grade: C

“That’s On Me (Remix)” by Yella Beezy featuring 2 Chainz, T.I., Rich The Kid, Jeezy, Boosie Badazz and Trapboy Freddy
Dallas rapper Yella Beezy got 4 hall-of-fame southern rappers to appear on the remix of his big breakthrough hit, alongside one of his Dallas pals and fellow rookie Rich The Kid (although unlike Rich, Mr. Beezy did not bother to drop a new verse of his own here). 2 Chainz and T.I. offer typically excellent verses, but the real standout is Boosie, who should be getting invited onto remixes way more often than he does.
Best Verse: Boosie Badazz
Overall Grade: B+

“Thotiana (Remix)” by Blueface featuring Cardi B and YG
Terrible song, but one of Cardi's best verses.
Best Verse: Cardi B
Overall Grade: B-

“Triggered (Remix)” by Jhene Aiko featuring 21 Savage and Summer Walker
Another one of the oddly plentiful 21 Savage R&B remixes, and if any song wasn't really suited for a posse cut remix it'd probably be "Triggered (Freestyle)." His doubletime flow ain't bad, though.
Best Verse: 21 Savage
Overall Grade: B

“Truth Hurts (Remix)” by Lizzo featuring DaBaby
The closest thing to a DaBaby backlash I saw this year was the day the "Truth Hurts" remix came out and people kind of mocked him for sounding awkward on the beat and 'only having one flow' that doesn't work at this tempo. I don't really agree, I think his verse is alright, but fuck this song.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: C

“WIN (Remix)” by Jay Rock featuring Snoop Dogg
I like hearing two generation of west coast rap together, but I never would've thought to put Snoop on this song and his conversational flow sounds a little weird on a bombastic horn-driven anthem.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: C-

“Without Me (Remix)” by Halsey featuring Juice WRLD
I'm writing this the week Juice WRLD died tragically at the age of 21, so it's a little different listening to this remix now than when it came out. I thought he sounded good on pop collaborations, though, my favorite verse of his was the one on Ellie Goulding's "Hate Me," and he adds something here to a song I didn't care much for before, kind of feels more like a bridge than a rap verse.
Best Verse: n/a
Overall Grade: B+

“Wow. (Remix)” by Post Malone featuring Tyga and Roddy Ricch
"Wow." is pretty much the only one of Post Malone's last half dozen hits that I would call 100% a rap song, so it makes sense that it's the one with a posse cut remix, and it's cool that he kind of acknowledged the west coast vibe of the beat with two Cali stars.
Best Verse: Roddy Ricch
Overall Grade: C+
