Deep Album Cuts Vol. 292: Lil Baby

Lil Baby released It's Only Me last month, and people really hate the single "Heyy," but some of the album tracks have charted higher than it. In general, it feels like Lil Baby's best songs usually aren't when he's trying to make a hit, a lot of his biggest songs like "Emotionally Scarred" or "We Paid" were just album tracks that took off.

"All of a Sudden" was the first song that got me really excited about Lil Baby and Moneybagg Yo and it's still one of my favorite songs by either of them and I think all their tracks together are great, so I included a couple. Hopefully they'll do a duo project someday. But obviously Drip Harder with Gunna is one of Lil Baby's biggest records. I think I kind of slept on Street Gossip at the time because it came out weeks after Drip Harder and it just seemed like he should've let that one breathe, but it's really good too.

It's remarkable to me that Lil Baby's earliest tape came out in 2017 and barely a year later he had a Drake feature, and within 3 years he had a giant 4x platinum album, bigger than his mentor Young Thug or pretty much any of his Atlanta contemporaries. Obviously there's a lot of Wheezy, Quay Global, Southside, and ATL Jacob tracks on this album, and Lil Baby has a particular sound. But I tried to find some outliers to mix things up, like the DJ Paul-produced "Gang Signs" or the sunny "Same Thing."
