The 2022 Remix Report Card, Vol. 4

Here's Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3. All remixes below are in my Spotify playlist, and the year-end ranking will follow in December.

"Baby Wyd? (Remix)" by Nardo Wick featuring Latto and Lakeyah
The menacingly monotone gangsta rapper Nardo Wick is just about the last guy you'd think major labels would make do sexy songs for the ladies. But the Future and Lil Baby-assisted "Me Or Sum" worked better than it had a right to, and the Lakeyah collaboration from his album has been remixed for a single release on the deluxe edition. Nardo Wick is absolutely ridiculous on this song, riffing on the stomping bit from "Who Want Smoke?" but making queefing noises, and Latto piles on, doing the same with ass clapping noises. Latto is really not as good a rapper as Lakeyah, though, so the remix is not really an upgrade.

"Better Thangs (Remix)" by Ciara featuring GloRilla and Summer Walker
Pretty good song and like many I'm unconditionally rooting for GloRilla, but this isn't really the right kind of track to invite her on, she sounds out of place.

"F.N.F. (Let's Go) - Remix" by Hitkidd & GloRilla featuring JT and Latto
Way back in the spring when "F.N.F." was blowing up, GloRilla and Saweetie previewed a remix, but a few months later the final remix surfaced with different guests. It came out nicely, though, the half of the City Girls that can really rap stealing the track as usual. I feel like this version would've gotten a lot more love if it came out earlier (or if it just came out more than 2 weeks before "Tomorrow 2").

"Gotta Move On (Kings Remix)" by Diddy featuring Fabolous, Tory Lanez and Bryson Tiller
"Gotta Move On (Queens Remix)" by Diddy featuring Yung Miami, Ashanti and Bryson Tiller
The half of City Girls that can't really rap is currently dating Diddy, so that's who's on the remix to his latest hit, unfortunately. The 'kings remix' uses the beat from the original "Gotta Move On," but 'queens remix' co-produced by Ron Browz changes the beat and the whole vibe to great effect, and Ashanti surprisingly bodied her verse. There's also a nice Cool & Dre remix with a Michael McDonald sample but I didn't cover that since there's no guest rappers on it.
Best Verse: Ashanti
Overall Grade: D / B-

"HDBG Shemix" by Tweeday featuring cupcakKe and Erica Banks
Louisiana rapper Tweeday's breakout TikTok hit was originally called "How The Bed Go," but in remixed it's "HBDG," so it's "da bed" now I guess. Mediocre version of a mediocre song, the "Some Cut" bed squeak loop is so played out, sex rap fell off.
Best Verse: cupcakKe

"Let's Get It (Remix)" by Hunxho featuring 21 Savage
"Let's Get It" is a pretty good song, cool loping piano loop and some slick lines like "got two sticks inside the couch and it's a pullout." I have more respect for 21 as a rapper than I did a few years ago. And his verse is alright, but not as good as Hunxho's, and there's a weird room tone on 21's verse that really sticks out, sounds kind of poorly recorded for a big star whose stuff usually sounds polished.

"Likkle Miss (Fine Nine Remix)" by Skeng and Nicki Minaj featuring Spice, Destra Garcia, Patrice Roberts, Lady Leshurr, Pamputtae, Dovey Magnum, Lisa Mercedez, and London Hill
Nicki Minaj remixed Jamaican dancehall artist Skeng's song for her recent greatest hits album, and then followed it up with another remix with a ton of guests. There's just an incredible range of creative sexual innuendo and heavy patois here, really fun track. I think Lisa Mercedez has the best line of the track "gyal wey favor Ninja Turtle, cyaan fit inna we circle" but Patrice Robert's melodic flip at the end is really great too.
Best Verse: Lisa Mercedez

"PG Baby (Remix)" by Redveil featuring Denzel Curry
Redveil is an 18-year-old producer/rapper from Prince George's County, Maryland and I've been really happy to see his career blossom over the couple years, partly because I also live in PG County. He's gotten some co-signs and praise from big names but I think this is the first time he's been on a track with someone as big as Denzel Curry, who I think could be a could career path template for him to follow. "PG Baby" was the biggest song from his Learn 2 Swim album, I guess it'd be cool to get someone else from PG on it, but I think Rico Nasty is probably the only other famous rapper from Prince George's County, and it's hard to picture her on this beat, anyway Curry is good on the song. Redveil's verses are the same from the original, but he adds a nice new melodic outro after Curry's verse.

"Tomorrow 2" by Glorilla featuring Cardi B
I really liked "Tomorrow" a lot even before the remix (and will always be very entertained by the producer drop that samples the Cartoon Network classic "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends"). But Cardi is one of those guests that can really take the song to another level, and it feels more complete with her on it, great verse.

"2 Million Up" by Peezy featuring Jeezy, Real Boston Richey, and Rob49
"2 Million Up" has been getting a lot of radio spins here lately and really growing on me, really puts a fresh spin on the familiar  "Don't Look Any Further" sample. I don't think the remix improves on the original but I like hearing Jeezy on this beat.
Best Verse: Jeezy

"Xtasy (Remix)" by Ravyn Lenae featuring Doechii
I like hearing Doechii on a Kaytranada production, there's a lot of potential in that combination.

"Y'all Life (Remix)" by Walker Hayes featuring Ciara
Walker Hayes remixed his biggest hit with Kesha last year, so his current single continues the crossover outreach with another remix with a star from outside country. I don't love the song, but it's not as annoying as "Fancy Like" and Ciara is having a lot of fun on the remix, cool to hear her so comfortable on this kind of song.
