I just barely decided to count the "Luxurious" remix, since it's apparently a few months old, but 92Q's been playing it heavily lately. And I like it a lot, especially considering I've disliked all of Stefani's solo singles except "Cool" (and, ugh, "Crash" is amazingly by far the worst yet). It's a total improvement on the original, replacing the poorly employed Biggie/Isley sample with gorgeous strings and a Miami bass-ish beat, switching out the sluggish Slim Thug verse for Ludacris rapping through weird vocal effects, and ditching the horrible "chi-ching" bridge for the "if you ain't got no money take your broke ass home" chant. The complete change of context even makes me like the melody and tolerate her Olive Oyl vocal timbre.

remy ma? really?

Interesting. You can count the indie rock entries on one hand, and most of them have debatable "indieness" anyway. Has your taste in music changed that much, or do you just think indie rock sucks right now? I'm not saying that I have the 411 on all this great shit that you're missing, but I'm just curious.

Also, I have to be honest with you: "Grillz" MIGHT have been the worst song ever recorded, were it not for the line "I got more bills in my mouth than Hillary Rodham." I'm paraphrasing there. :-)

-Chris

Remy's definitely #1 by default. saying something is the best album I've heard in the 2 months isn't really high praise anyway, this list is just kind of a placeholder/update.

the lack of rock/indie is more a circumstance of what's come out so far this year than anything else. there's definitely a few rock albums coming out soon that I'm looking forward to (hopefully I'll be getting the Jon Auer promo soon) but not really any in the 1st quarter. most of the stuff in the albums list is okay-to-mediocre hip hop I've reviewed or am going to review because I like to write about that stuff, when it's good and when it's bad. I've bought a lot of rock CDs lately, but they've been mostly old albums (Little Feat, Ruth Ruth, Apollo Sunshine, Springsteen) and greatest hits comps (Joan Jett, The Who, Willie Nelson, The Cars, Tim Buckley). besides, while I still like a lot of rock music being made these days, I hate most indie, at least the Pitchfork zeitgeist stuff.

btw, I was only referring to the albums list re: the indie/not indie thing, the singles list is a whole different bag because I generally only include stuff I've actually heard on the radio/MTV, so no token singles by indie bands that I wouldn't have heard if I didn't own the album.

and that line from "Grillz" you quoted is a pretty lame punchline, and it would make more sense if he said Monica instead of Hillary anyway.

By far the best part of Grillz, is when Gipp makes it clear he only jumped on the track to declare he was the first with his mouth bright white. he was wearing a grill in that goodie mob video from 95 about people looking in their windows bloaw nobody now. he really was the first.

I still find it hard to believe that remy ma album is any good. i didn't even like "yeah yeah yeah"
