Anthony is right, although he lays on a bit thicker than I would've. A week or two ago I finally listened to some Art Brut just so I would feel justified in disliking them based on everything I'd read about them, but it was actually worse than I expected. It's stuff like that that reminds me that if I'd spent the past 5 years trying to keep up with what the indie nation is hyping, I'd probably be one of those "rock is dead" doomsayers, instead of happily listening to the mostly really unfashionable contemporary bands that I like along with a whole lot of classic rock.

Oh bullshit. Anthony is not right. The difference between Art Brut and all those other post-punk revisitors is that Art Brut sounds like they're actually having a good time. They have a sense of humor.

Yeah I dunno, I don't really pay attention to the post-punk sweepstakes that much. But I don't think humorously self-conscious lyrics are such a unique virtue in and of itself that they deserve praise just for that. It seems to me that a lot of indie bands have gotten a free pass in the last few years for constantly reminding you that they're a band and maybe admitting that they suck or are derivative in order to convince you that they don't.

It's not just the lyrics. They're cheerful. That alone seems to mark a pretty big line between themselves and other more post-punky bands.
