I may say this again for some other year but this really feels like potentially the all-time greatest year for soul music. And I haven't made a lot of space for jazz in lists for later years but that's going to start to be a more significant presence as I go back towards the '60s. Obviously a lot of artists released multiple albums a year back then, and I can often be happy only including one of them, but Stevie Wonder, Al Green, and Aretha Franklin had pretty remarkable pairs of albums in '72.
