After I made a mix for J.G.'s brother a few months ago, their mom heard it and liked it, "The Ice Of Boston" in particular, and to my surprise, requested that I make a CD for her too. So now pretty much that whole family has mix CDs from me. She's pretty open minded for her age, but then, my taste is pretty classic rock-oriented when it comes to even newer rock music, so it wasn't too hard for me to make it accessible for her, and I included a lot of the same artists from John's mix, although mostly different songs. I think it came out pretty well. The Michael Bublé track was one that J.G. asked me to grab off iTunes and include, but that song is actually kinda growin' on me.

1. Ted Leo/Pharmacists - "Timorous Me"
2. Apollo Sunshine - "Today Is The Day"
3. The B-52's - "Private Idaho"
4. The Dismemberment Plan - "The Ice Of Boston"
5. The Posies - "Conversations"
6. Elliott Smith - "Angeles"
7. The Who - "5'15"
8. Spymob - "Walking Under Green Leaves"
9. John Mellencamp - "Cherry Bomb"
10. Ben Folds Five - "Philosophy
11. Talking Heads - "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel"
12. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - "High Fidelity"
13. They Might Be Giants - "Don't Let's Start"
14. Rufus Wainwright - "April Fools"
15. Brendan Benson - "What I'm Looking For"
16. Chris Lee - "Lonesome Eyes"
17. Private Eleanor - "On Our Side"
18. Randy Newman - "Baltimore"
19. Michael Bublé - "Home"
20. Jeff Buckley - "Satisfied Mind"

7. Mark Snow - "Materia Primoris" (X-Files)
8. Polaris - "Hey Sandy" (The Adventures Of Pete & Pete)
9. The Minutemen - "Corona" (Jackass)
10. The Who - "Baba O'Riley" (C.S.I.: NY)
11. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - "Bad Reputation" (Freaks And Geeks)
12. Phantom Planet - "California" (The O.C.)

16. Jane's Addiction - "Superhero" (Entourage)

18. Tom Waits - "Way Down In The Hole" (The Wire, season 2)
19. The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (C.S.I.: Miami)

A while back, J.G. was saying something ot me about about all of the TV show themes she likes, and ended up commissioning me to track down some of her favorites, and the idea kind of blossomed from there, until I ended up with a whole CD of songs, some of which aren't even shows she watches (for the most part, I like every track's theme and/or the show itself, except I'm a Sopranos hater and don't care for the song either, but got carried away with the block of HBO shows). I pretty much stuck to the theme of songs that pre-existing bands had written before being appropriated for the show, although the X-Files one and maybe a couple others don't quite count. This is the final version, the Jackass and Drew Carey themes were added after the version I burned for J.G. I think the Fresh Prince theme is, along with "Baby Got Back," the rap song that every white kid of my generation can recite word for word, but I'm still working on memorizing that verse from the full version where he's on the plane.

Two Dollar Guitar best-of mix, part 1:

2. Happy Guitar
3. Kilroy
4. Song For A Dead Friend (mp3)
5. Cascade
6. Path Train Blues
7. Interlude
8. Blood On The Plow
9. Canny
10. Conversation With Myself
11. Guilt
12. Black Star

16. Stones Vs. Zep

Yesterday, I talked a bit about my Stylus piece on Smells Like Records, and posted some tracks from the label's releases. But I only mentioned in passing my favorite Smells Like band, Two Dollar Guitar, the band led by Tim Foljahn that featured Steve Shelley on drums and (usually) Dave Motamed on bass. Ten years ago when I was a teenager obsessed with Sonic Youth, I would rummage through the SY bin at stores and snap up whatever was in there, side projects, noise improv solo albums, whatever. And I bought Two Dollar Guitar's Burned And Buried without having any idea what it sounded like or even what the SY link was. And that just ended up being one of those random indie records that I fixated on at that age, even though it didn't really sound like SY or anything else I was listening to. Tim Foljahn just sings these morbidly funny and sometimes genuinely sad songs in a low, unpolished voice, and most of the other artists that I've since realized are probably comparable (like, I don't know, probably Nick Cave) never really grabbed me in the same way.

A couple years later, my first foray into making a website was a Two Dollar Guitar fansite. You have to remember, this is back in the 90's when a lot of bands didn't even have official sites, so this was maybe less geeky thing to do than it would be today, although still really geeky. And it's a thoroughly 90's webpage from my personal AOL account with very barebones design and primitive HTML and everything. The amazing thing is that even though I started this site almost 8 years ago, and probably haven't updated it in about 6, it's still there, which I guess is the sole benefit of keeping the same AOL account going all this time. I don't think I even would know how to take down or update the site if I wanted to at this point.

In the course of running the site, I exchanged a lot of e-mails with the SLR folks. And in October '99, by complete coincidence, Two Dollar Guitar ended up playing a show opening for Mike Watt in the tiny Delaware resort town where I lived. So I set up an interview before the show, and my brother and I got to interview Tim, Steve, and their bassist at the time, Janet. I thought about editing and reprinting the interview here on Narrowcast, but ultimately decided against it, partly because it's still there, and partly because it's pretty rambling and trivial, and pertains largely to the album that they released a few months later, and goes off on tangents about the lounge singer I used to work for as a soundman and a bunch of other random stuff. It's kind of a funny read, although I wouldn't necessarily reccomend that you bother with it, unless you care at all about TDG or at least Steve Shelley. There are a few pictures of the band and me with the band, if you have any interest in seeing a 17-year-old version of me, thinner and with more hair, standing next to some of my musical heroes.

The album that Two Dollar Guitar released a few months later, Weak Beats And Lame-Ass Rhymes, has some of their best stuff, and I saw them live a couple more times after it was released. But that was about 6 years ago, and there's been barely any activity from the band since. Tim has played a few solo shows in New York since then, and in 2003 he played a show in Baltimore and I got to catch up with him a little bit and hear the new songs he was working on, including a really promising one based around the guitar line from "Cascade," from the Train Songs instrumental album. But it's been 2 and a half years since then and no other hint of a new album yet, so I'm not holding my breath, although I would be the first in line to buy it.

I just kinda threw this mix together, and I mainly call it Part 1 because I wasn't able to include a lot of stuff I'd like to have. Ideally I'd include stuff from their 7"s (the b-side "Music Don't Matter" is easily one of my all-time favorite TDG tracks), Tim's bizarre cassette-only releases on Old Gold Records, and the Weak Beats-era Insound tour support EP, which has some great covers and originals on it, but is all packed into 2 long tracks and isn't really usable for a mix CD. So someday if I can split up the tracks on that CD and digitize the other stuff, there'll be a part 2. Plus, their songs are generally pretty long, so I definitely can't fit all my favorites on one disc. This band has pretty limited appeal and I don't really expect them to cast the same spell on anyone else that they did for me, but I'm still gonna keep throwing the stuff I love out into the ether of cyberspace, like I've been doing since I was 16.

System Of A Down - Hypmerize or Meznotize or some other equally silly composite title

1. Hypnotize
2. Attack
3. Cigaro
4. Vicinity Of Obscenity
5. Violent Pornography
6. Question!
7. Radio/Video
8. B.Y.O.B.
9. This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song
10. U-Fig
11. Sad Statue
12. Tentative (mp3)
13. Holy Mountains
14. Soldier Side - Intro
15. Soldier Side

All the songs on Mezmerize and Hypnotize would easily fit on one CD, but I instead tried to organize my 7-8 favorite songs from each into a 49-minute sequence.

Last month I bought a new computer and for the first time finally have a CD burner. The first CD I burned was a mix that I gave to J.G.'s brother John as a Christmas gift:

1. Fugazi - "Song #1"
2. Medications - "Safe And Sorry"
3. The Dismemberment Plan - "The Ice Of Boston"
4. Apollo Sunshine - "Ghost"
5. Sonic Youth - "Teen Age Riot"
6. Superchunk - "Detroit Has A Skyline"
7. Brendan Benson - "I'm Easy"
8. Private Eleanor - "Estimated Distance"
9. Elvis Costello & The Attractions - "No Action"
10. Spymob - "It Gets Me Going"
11. Bob Dylan - "Simple Twist Of Fate"
12. Jeff Buckley - "Grace"
13. Lake Trout - "Pill"
14. Ted Leo/Pharmacist - "You Always Hate The One You Love" (mp3)
15. The Geraldine Fibbers - "Lilybelle"
16. Bruce Springsteen - "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)"
17. The Posies - "Song #1"

The Ted Leo track was the first thing I ever heard by him, way back in 2000 when I reviewed a crappy indie comp for Pitchfork that it was on, and it slowly had me hooked by the time Tyranny of Distance came out. In a way it's still one of my favorite songs by him and I kinda wish he'd do a whole record like that, solo and lo-fi but still energetic and song-driven.

4. Saucer-Like

9. NYC Ghosts & Flowers

Last summer I made this tape of (almost) every SY song with Lee Ranaldo on lead vocals (Lee and Thurston both sing on "Unwind", which I couldn't fit on). The title of the tape comes from the Goo demo track "Lee #2", which was retitled "The Notorious Rockin' Lee" on the Blow Job bootleg (the demo is instrumental but there's supposedly a live recording out there of a version with Lee singing on it). And "Lee Is Free" is an instrumental but included for obvious reasons as end-of-side filler.

Here's a decent little essay by Thurston Moore about mixtapes and cassette culture, a topic near and dear to my heart. Apparently it comes from a book on the subject edited by TM that's coming out in May, which is the kind of thing that gets me excited. I'm feeling especially sentimental about it right now since just a couple weeks ago the record button on my stereo's tape deck stopped working and I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that it makes more sense to finally get a CD burner than buy a new tape deck, which means that I may have already made my last mixtape. Sigh.

About 2-3 years ago I was hanging out a lot with a friend of mine named Chris in York, PA and playing drums in his band (I live a half hour from the MD/PA border so it's not a long drive). Chris strummed really slowly on an acoustic guitar and ran it through a bunch of effects and delay and I just played along and sometimes we had a keyboardist and/or a bassist and/or a violinist. Chris was a cool guy, I liked hanging out with him, although I wasn't really on the same wavelength with him musically at all. I don't think he was at all aware of how indifferent I was about some of his favorite bands (Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, etc.). But in a way I'm more cool with people like him who are kind of naively enthusiastic about their generic indie taste than cynical or really trying to be cool. Anyway, I kind of regarded it as a fun challenge to play slow, pretty shoegazey music, even if that's not really the kind of thing I actually listen to. Actually, come to think of it, all 3 of the bands that I've played in for a significant amount of time and accomplished something with (i.e. play in front of an audience and/or record original material) have all been rock subgenres that I don't really listen to (my last band was a metal band and in high school I played in I guess you could call it a 'screamo' band, although again I know nothing about that stuff). That's kind of the gift and the curse of being a drummer, though; you can have a completely different background than everyone else in the band and it doesn't matter if you can keep a beat. But it also means you rarely get to play what you really want to play. This is pretty much the reason why I'm taking a break from playing drums in other people's bands to make a solo record so I can actually figure out what kind of band I really want to play in by making one up.

Anyway, where was I? The band in York...Nice folks, although everyone I knew up there seemed to be a morbid alcoholic, and to this day my general impression of York is that it's this really depressing little college town where everyone drinks too much, although for all I know that's just the people I hung out with there. But Chris was a nice dude, I haven't seen him in a while and keep meaning to hang out again. At one point while we were doing the band thing he asked me to make him a mixtape, and I kinda tried to go for some of that slow pretty guitar music he likes, but from some indie-ish bands that I like (plus the Built To Spill stuff because he was really into them). I think it came out pretty well.

1. The Posies - "Coming Right Along"
2. Ted Leo - "Parallel Or Together?"

4. The Geraldine Fibbers - "Outside Of Town"

About 2 years ago, I was hanging out with my brother, and he let me go through the mp3 folder on his computer and pick out a bunch of songs and burn myself a CD. 1. The Clipse - "Grindin'"
2. Elvis Presley - "In The Ghetto"
3. No Doubt - "Sunday Morning"
4. Bruce Springsteen - "Rosalita"
5. Coldplay - "Shiver"

14. Main Source - "Live At The Barbecue"

I'm especially proud of the part on side 2 where I put 3 tracks in a row with the same beat (the Lil Mo, Em, and 50/Biggie). I just made this tape like 2 weeks ago, and it already feels out of date and there's a bunch of newer stuff I wish I'd put on it. Guess I'll have to make another tape!

(EDIT: upon request for Hillary and whoever else wants it, mp3s of both versions of "Sex In The Kitchen" now added)

Mixtape Tuesday

Tuesday, February 22, 2005
This week's selection is another one that did not make but received (also it's a CD, not a tape). Over the weekend J.G. and I went to her winter formal (she goes to a small private all-girls college, so dances and stuff like that are a bigger deal there than at other schools). We got dressed up all fancy, it was fun. Every year they have some kind of trinket or piece of memorabilia they give out to people who attend the dance. Last year it was glass with an engravement on it, this year it was mix CD's, which was widely regarded as a disappointment and a cheap ripoff. Next to each track is the name of the person who picked it (or in some cases, a group, such as "Psychology Dept." or "Class of 2007"). Mixes that are done by committee are always interesting, usually in kind of a trainwreck way. That's pretty much the reason why I haven't really considered getting involved in ILMiXor yet, it's just a weird idea, still not sure about it. Anyway this is the CD that everyone got a copy of at the dance:

1. Toploader - "Dancing In The Moonlight"
2. Frank Sinatra - "The Way You Look Tonight"
3. The Beach Boys - "God Only Knows"
4. Outkast - "Hey Ya!"
5. John Lennon - "Imagine"
6. Sheryl Crow - "One Less Bell To Answer"
7. White Stripes - "You're Pretty Good Looking"
8. The B-52's - "Love Shack"
9. Joni Mitchell - "Blue"
10. James Taylor - "Your Smiling Face"
11. The Mamas and the Papas - "California Dreamin'"
12. Lenny Kravitz - "American Woman"
13. Black Eyed Peas - "Hey Mama"
14. Rick James - "Superfreak"
15. The Grateful Dead - "Women Are Smarter"
16. Lit - "My Own Worst Enemy"
17. Cassidy featuring R. Kelly - "Hotel"

Of those songs, I think I wouldn't mind never hearing 4, 5, 11, 12, 16 and 17 ever again. I like 2, 3, 9 and 14 enough that I'm glad to have a copy of them on CD. And I love 8 but already have it on CD. I like the single version of 13 ok but the version on the mix is different, I guess the album version, and I don't like it as much. Also, Sheryl Crow singing Bacharach and David is something I don't think I needed to hear.

Mixtape Tuesday

Tuesday, February 15, 2005
Since I'm already on the topic of Kanye (so you can skip this one, Mat, and wait for the next post) and he's just about at the end of his long, rocky awards show cycle and is getting ready for a new album, here's a mix I made shortly after The College Dropout finally came out, compiling some of the best of the many tracks he put out on mixtapes and/or were on early bootleg versions of the album but didn't make the final version, along with some favorite freestyles and collabos. I might've posted this once on Gov't Names too.

Kanye West - The Album Dropouts

side 1:
1. "You Know" f/ White Boy, John Legend and Belo of Do Or Die
2. "Wow"
3. "All Falls Down" (live snippet) f/ John Legend
4. "Self Conscious" (original version of "All Falls Down") f/ Lauryn Hill
5. "Changing Lanes"
6. "Wack Niggas" f/ Talib Kweli
7. "Wack Niggas" (remix) f/ Talib Kweli, Common and Consequence
8. "Better Than Yours" ("Milkshake" freestyle) f/ Common
9. "Dream Killers" aka "Gossip Files"
10. "Finally Got It Right" aka "Peace"
11. "I Need To Know"
12. "Stand Up" freestyle
13. "Heavy Hitters" f/ GLC
14. "Out The Game" f/ Consequence and John Legend
15. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" f/ Consequence
16. "Electric Relaxation" freestyle f/ Consequence
17. "Yeah"
18. Akademiks Vol. 2 intro v/ Miri Ben-Ari

side 2:
1. "Keep The Receipt" f/ Dirt McGirt aka Ol' Dirty Bastard
2. "Nothin's Gonna Stop Me"
3. "Livin' A Movie"
4. "Roommates" f/ Consequence
5. "Take It As A Loss" f/ Consequence
6. "Arguments" f/ Martin Lawrence and John Legend
7. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" f/ Murphy Lee
8. "About An Angel (Got Nowhere)" f/ John Legend
9. "My Way"
10. "Home" f/ John Legend
11. "Apoloize"
12. "Hey Mama"
13. I'm Good intro
14. "Through The Wire" (remix)

It's not all top shelf material, but there's some great stuff on there (I was pretty pissed at the time that "Keep The Receipt" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" got cut from early versions of the album, but "Hey Mama" and maybe some others will make it onto Late Registration). All through 2003 I collected every mixtape and every outside production and every morsel of music I could find with Kanye's name on it, and as much as he likes to remind people, I don't think everyone realizes what an underdog he really was at that point. His album got delayed for nearly 2 years. I remember when he put snippets of the beginning of "Jesus Walks" on no less than 4 mixtapes, none any longer than 50 seconds, and on one of them he introduced it as "my new single -- what I want to be my new single", and you could tell by his tone that Roc-A-Fella wasn't wild about the idea. I never really got into that song, actually. After all those snippets, when I finally heard the whole thing all I could think about was the fact that he rhymed "Jesus" with "Regis".

Mixtape Tuesday

Tuesday, February 08, 2005
As I mentioned in last week's installment, I've made many tapes for J.G. over the years and have converted her to several artists, but mostly people that are fairly accessible to begin with, like Ted Leo or Brendan Benson or Jeff Buckley. So I was kind of surprised when she asked me recently about what Sonic Youth albums are good and if I could make her a tape or something. They're pretty much my favorite band of all time, but I never really tried to sell her on them, just because they're kind of an acquired taste and a good bit more out there than the aforementioned artists. But she saw something on TV about them, I think a VH1 list show (the only one I've ever seen them on was the greatest hard rock bands of all time), and was intrigued. So I made her a tape:

side 1:
1. Teenage Riot
2. Skip Tracer
3. French Tickler
4. Purr
5. Kool Thing
6. 100%
7. JC
8. Dirty Boots
9. Beauty Lies In The Eye
10. Mote

side 2:
1. Schizophrenia
2. Eric's Trip
3. Sugar Kane
4. Kissability
5. Sunday
6. Bull In The Heather
7. Candle
8. Shadow of a Doubt
9. Genetic
10. Diamond Sea [single edit]
11. Kotton Krown

It was kind of hard to put their catalog in enough perspective to really pick out the right songs. I mean, last summer I went through a phase of making tons of tapes to listen to in the car, and I made 5 themed SY mixes (all of Lee's songs, or all instrumentals, etc., I'll probably post some of those eventually), and a lot of the songs on this tape weren't on any of those 5 tapes. I've never really disliked any of those songs (except "100%", which was the first song I ever heard by them and I always hated it), I just don't feel the need to put, say, "Kool Thing" on a tape for myself. So it was nice to revisit some of the (ahem) hits in order to give J.G. a fitting introduction, along with some of my favorites. It's not a very complete picture, though, obviously; nothing before '86 or after '98 (although I'm a bigger fan of the later stuff than many), and an emphasis on Sister through Dirty. You really can't go wrong with that stuff, at least when you're trying to show how good they can be at being a rock band. The eventual best-of of the DGC years will make a pretty great stocking stuffer.

This is the first mixtape I ever made for my girlfriend, J.G., when we first started dating in May of 2002:

side 1:
1. La Lengua Asesina - "Hotel Opera"
2. Ben Folds Five - "Philosophy"
3. The Dismemberment Plan - "The Ice Of Boston"
4. Saltine - "Reveal Love"
5. Soul Coughing - "I Miss The Girl"
6. J Mascis & The Fog - "Same Day"
7. They Might Be Giants - "First Kiss" (live)
8. Superchunk - "Hyper Enough"
9. Pavement - "Spit On A Stranger"
10. The Posies - "You're The Beautiful One"
11. The Dismemberment Plan - "Time Bomb"
12. Eels - "Ant Farm"
13. La Lengua Asesina - "Hotel Opera (reprise)"

side 2:
1. The Clash - "Train In Vain"
2. Elvis Costello & the Attractions - "High Fidelity"
3. Al Green - "Tired Of Being Alone"
4. They Might Be Giants - "Why Does The Sun Shine? (The Sun Is A Mass Of Incandescent Gas)"
5. Brendan Benson - "Emma J"
6. Lake Trout - "Sounds From Below"
7. Sonic Youth - "Shadow Of A Doubt"
8. The Dismemberment Plan - "Following Through"
9. Ben Folds Five - "Missing The War"
10. Sparklehorse - "Hundreds Of Sparrows"
11. Elliott Smith - "Say Yes"
12. Ted Leo / Pharmacists - "Biomusicology"
13.Jeff Buckley - "Hallelujah"

I've made her a half dozen other mixtapes since this one, but she says this one is still her favorite, and when she lost it, she requested that I make it for her again, which I did a few months ago. The only difference on the new version was the omission of "Train In Vain", which was due to the fact that I had accidently stepped on and broken the one Clash best-of CD-R I had, but it worked alright because on the original, "Hallelujah" got cut off at the end of the tape, but now there was enough room for all of it. My tastes are considerably broader (and more obscure) than J.G.'s, but I try not too pull the music snob "my girlfriend doesn't understand/needs to be educated about good music" attitude. There is a good amount of crossover between our tastes, though, so I enjoy bringing alt/indie stuff to her attention that she might enjoy. Since I made this for her, she's acquired (either bought or burnt from my copies of) albums by about a half dozen of the artists on this tape, and has accompanied me to many D Plan and Ted Leo shows.

Mixtape Tuesday

Just to set the precedent that sometimes this space will feature not just tapes I made, but tapes other people made for me, this is one of my favorite mixes I've ever received, from my friend Mat. About 4-5 years ago, we were talking about the fact that we had both recently written papers for school about our respective musical heroes. Mine was Elvis Costello and his was Prince. We were each curious but not particularly familiar with each other's subjects. So we decided to make introductory mixes for each other, I made an EC mix, and this is his Prince mix:

side 1:
1. "Another Lonely Christmas"
2. "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?"
3. "When You Were Mine"
4. "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" (single edit)
5. "Honky Tonk Woman"
6. "Starfish & Coffee"
7. "Nothing Compares 2 U" (live)
8. "Tambourine"
9. "The Cross"
10. "Shockadelica"
11. "Endorphinmachine"
12. "Feel You Up"

side 2:
1. "Raspberry Beret"
2. "Erotic City"
3. "I Would Die 4 U"
4. "Scarlet Pussy"
5. "7"
6. "Little Red Corvette"
7. "I Feel For You"
8. "She's Always In My Hair"
9. "Irresistible Bitch"
10. "Purple Rain"
11. "Bustin' Loose" (live)

There's some fairly obscure stuff from Mat's vault of bootlegs in there in addition to the hits, like the awesome Stones cover and the live Chuck Brown cover, and side 1 ends with a clip of the audio from Prince's famously awkward interview with Dick Clark on American Bandstand in '79. Mat's birthday was a couple weeks ago, and since he's already read several Prince books, I got him Matos's Sign O' The Times book, and got a copy for myself too, since I've been meaning to pick it up since it came out.
